Melville: Toward an Existential Vision of the Universe

Specialization Seminar
Objectives of the course

  • To acquaint the students with Herman Melville as writer and thinker locating his oeuvre in the context of American and World Romanticism;
  • To immerse the students on the discourse of Melville's sea-locked-novels in order to explore the possible interdependency between the experience of the "inhuman sea" and the proliferation of discursive categories serving "therapeutical" purposes;
  • To acquaint the students with the major trends in 19th century American “literary philosophies”
  • To “personalize” students’ reception of Herman Melville’s literature

Character of the course:

  • The course is based on class discussion prompted by instructor's introductory lecture and based on homework;
  • New topics are introduced in the form of a lecture (with  emphasis on teacher’s talk )
  • Each subsequent class is dedicated to analysis and debate (with emphasis on group discussion)
  • Throughout the course, students, assisted by the instructor, work on their Take Home Examination Paper, which they ultimately submit for publication in Litteraria
