The list of fims below appears to be rather exhaustive; Melville, unlike Conrad, is not among the writers most popular with filmmakers. The films, of course, are not among the mandatory materials, even though I would like to take the liberty to encourage you to watch them.
I have ordered all of the films and am hoping that they will arrive in Grinnell before the course begins. Should this be the case, I would like to invite all of you to join me for a series of relaxed evenings with Melvillean movies.
However, rest assured that
extracurricular work of this kind is not a part of your credit work, which is why you should by no means feel obliged to be present.
Still, I promise, it will be interesting to see how the subsequent directors' interpretations of Melville's oeuvre changed over time and what historico-cultural processes such an evolution reflected.
